TMPRSS2 also designated PRSS10 or Transmembrane protease serine 2 or Serine protease 10, is a 492 amino acid type II transmembrane multimeric serine protease that belongs to the serine protease family. It contains type II transmembrane domain, a scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domain of group A, a LDL receptor class A domain and a serine protease domain. Serine proteases are involved in many physiological and pathological processes and this glycosylated serine protease is regulated by androgens. TMPRSS2 is expressed as a full length form and a cleaved protease domain on the plasma membrane of human bronchial epithelial cells, nasal goblet cells, small intestine epithelia, gastrointestinal tract, salivary gland, kidneys and pancreas. High expression of TMPRSS2 is seen in prostate tissue, prostate cancer cells and lower expression levels are observed in the androgen-independent prostate cancer tissue, epithelia of the colon, stomach, epididymis and breast tissue.
