SFTPD (Surfactant pulmonary-associated protein D) is a protein that belongs to group III of the collectin family of C-type lectins. It is synthesized in many tissues including respiratory epithelial cells, alveolar type II cells and nonciliated bronchiolar cells in the lung. SFTPD is considered as humoral molecules of the innate immune system and is upregulated in a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions. It is also involved in the development of acute and chronic inflammation of the lung by maintaining surfactant homeostasis by regulating the structure of
surfactant phospholipids.
