PSA is a glycoprotein of molecular weight 33-34 kD and it is a serine protease secreted ?at higher concentrations by malignant and normal prostatic epithelium. Clone ErPr8 is directed against a 35 kD protein identical to PSA. PSA and prostatic acid phosphatase are biochemically and immunologically different from each other. Staining with this antibody is limited to the cytoplasm of ductal and prostatic acinar epithelium. This antibody is useful for determining if an isolated metastasis is of prostatic origin. Since PSA is released by prostatic tumors, PSA serves as a valuable serum marker of neoplasia.
