Prostate acid phosphatase (PAP) is secreted by prostate gland, it is a 100 kD glycoprotein present in high concentration in the prostate gland secretions. PAP measurement is clinically significant, the rise in serum levels of Prostate acid phosphatase (PAP) is co-related with prostatic carcinoma. Immunohistochemical analysis showed PAP has been found localized within the large secretory vacuoles of the supra nuclear portion of the prostatic columnar epithelial cell. In hyperplastic prostates and in benign prostatic tissue adjacent to the prostatic carcinoma, PAP activity is limited to the acinar or ductal columnar epithelial cells and adjacent luminal content. PAP reactivity in an extraprostatic tumor is an accurate and sensitive indicator of metastatic prostatic carcinoma
