Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), a single-chain polypeptide of about 18.5 kD is expressed in myelin sheath and also in myelin ovoids. MBP is not localized in rough endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, or any other cytoplasmic organelles. MBP can be used as a marker for oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells and malignant Schwannomas. This antibody is useful in defining some of the elements in the catabolism of myelin in multiple sclerosis, experimental encephalomyelitis, and other diseases of the central nervous system
