The melanoma associated antigen is a formalin resistant glycoprotein with a disulphide dependent configuration that is essential for recognition by the NKI/C3 monoclonal antibody. This antibody recognizes a heterogeneous 25-110 kD glycoprotein that is located mainly in the inner side of membranes of cytoplasmic vesicles in melanoma cells. NKI/C3 works reliably on tissue sections and should be considered when assembling a panel of monoclonal antibodies either for evaluation of anaplastic tumors or for further study of the melanocyte in normal and pathological states. This antibody reacts with melanoma, nevocellular nevi, carcinoids and medullary carcinomas of the thyroid. It does not react with basal cell carcinoma, brain tissue or brain tumors.
