The light chains of immunoglobulin molecules may be either Kappa or Lambda The clonal nature of any immunoglobulinproducing cell population can be determined by its light chain structure. Lambda chains are expressed on the surface of Bcells. Antibodies to kappa and lambda light chains are used for the evaluation of leukemias, plasmacytomas, and certain nonHodgkin’s lymphomas, the majority of which are derived from B-cell lineage. The most important uses of this technique would be in distinguishing atypical reactive follicular lymphoid hyperplasia from follicular lymphoma, undifferentiated carcinoma from large cell lymphoma, pseudolymphoma from lymphoma, and reactive plasmacytosis from well differentiated plasmacytoma.
