Interleukin 3 (IL-3), also called Mast Cell Growth Factor (MCGF), Multi-Colony Stimulating Factor (multi-CSF), or Eosinophil-CSF (E-CSF), is a pleiotropic cytokine that is primarily produced by activated T cells, mast cells and eosinophils. It stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells as well as various lineage committed progenitors. IL3 supports the formation of multilineage colonies of macrophages, neutrophils, mast cells, and megakaryocytes from agar-suspended bone marrow cells and is involved in a variety of cell activities such as cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. IL-3 also induces neurotrophic activity, and may be associated with neurologic disorders.
