The basic structure of an immunoglobulin molecule consists of two identical chains, either γ, µ, α, δ or ε, and two identical light chains, either kappa or lambda. The gene rearrangement process that generates the immunoglobulin molecule results in either a productive kappa or lambda gene. The ratio of kappa and lambda light chain varies between Ig classes and subclasses. The lambda chain antibody labels the lambda light chain that expresses normal and neoplastic B lymphocytes and plasma cells. Other cells may also express lambda light chain due to nonspecific uptake of imunoglobulin. The occurrence of a mixture of kappa and lambda chain expressing cells suggests a polyclonal population and a reactive or nonreactive proliferation of B cells .
