Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a 40 kD glycoprotein secreted in large quantities by the placenta and normally circulates at readily detectable levels only during gestation. A wide variety of tumors secrete hCG. Along with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), hCG also represents a tumor marker for which systematic correlative clinical and histological studies have been made. Immunohistochemical studies reveal localization of hCG in syncytiotrophoblasts.
