Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a member of Herpesviridae family of viruses that has Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Varicella zoster (chicken pox) virus amongst others. HSV-I & HSV-II have a characteristic virion structure and are extremely difficult to differentiate from one other. It infects mucoepithelia cells or the skin. The antibody cocktail helps in detecting HSV-I or HSV-II specific antigens and antigens common to both types in the cells obtained from superficial lesions or biopsies and HSV infected tissue cultures.
