Glucagon
Glucagon is a 29-amino acid polypeptide hormone synthesized and secreted from alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. It functions as an antagonist to Insulin by stimulating gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis, lipolysis and ketogensis, leading to increased blood glucose levels. An elevated expression of glucagon is observed in pancreatic tumors such as glucagonoma and is used as an analytical tool in qualification of the hormone.
