Epithelial membrane antigen antibody (EMA) also known as episialin, is a member of heterogeneous family of highlyglycosylated transmembrane proteins known as human milk fat globule (HMFG) membrane proteins. It is expressed in normal and neoplastic epithelial cells of various tissues and lesser degree of staining is seen in carcinomas of the endometrium,
kidney, thyroid, stomach, Breast Carcinoma, lung, colon, ovary, prostate and cervix. EMA is also positive in meningiomas, which is useful when distinguishing it from other intracranial neoplasms e.g. Schwannomas. It labels Reed-Sternberg cells in nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphomas. The absence of its expression can also be of value since negative EMA is characteristic of some tumors including Adrenal Carcinoma, Seminomas, Paraganglioma and Hepatoma.
