CK17 is a 46 kD keratin of type I intermediate filament chain found in simple epithelia sometimes in association with Cytokeratin 7. It is expressed along with K6 and K16 after acute human skin injury. In basal cell carcinomas (BCC) predominant expression of K17 and the frequent expression of K8 and K19, with little K6/K16 and K1/K10 expression are seen, suggesting that BCC is differentiated towards undifferentiated follicular epithelia, most probably hair bulge cells. This antibody has been used to distinguish cervical immature squamous metaplasia from high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN III).
