The CD95 (Fas) protein is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family cell surface receptor that plays a critical role in death signaling on polymerization of its subunits by multimeric Fas ligand (CD95L), CD95 (Fas) protein cell surface receptor posses eight subunits in its in its soluble form or membrane ?bound formed from cleavage by metalloproteinases. CD95 is expressed as surface receptor protein on stem cells. CD95 (Fas) protein plays a major role during postembryonic and embryonic development influencing morphological and functional maturity in a variety of systems by means of apoptosis, that includes the development of the neuronal cell network and clonal selection and apoptosis of auto reactive T cells. The CD95 (Fas) protein mediated apoptosis plays significant role in various apoptosis conditions incurred by irradiation, viral infections and chemotherapeutic agents. The CD95 (Fas) protein expression serves as a marker in predicting the conclusion of disease succession and treatment in many types of tumors.
