This antibody reacts with CD71 antigen (also known as T9 or Transferrin Receptor), a homo-dimeric type II membrane protein consisting of two identical sub-units of approximately 95 kD covalently linked by two intermolecular disulfide bonds. Transferrin Receptor binds the serum transport protein transferrin and mediates the uptake of iron into the cell. Transferrin Receptor is present on 10% of thymocytes, activated lymphocytes, myelocytes, and nucleated erythrocyte precursors. This antigen has also been identified on the endothelium of brain capillaries, on carcinomas and sarcomas of various origins as well as on both high- and low-grade malignant lymphomas
