CD43 is cell surface glycoprotein of thymocytes and T lymphocytes. CD43 has a significant role in the physicochemical properties of the T cell surface and in lectin binding. CD43 molecule defects are associated with the development of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. It also appears in about 25% of intestinal MALTomas. CD43 has an extended rodlike structure that presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins, ?It could protrude above the glycocalyx of the cell and allow multiple glycan chains to be accessible for binding. CD43 antigen is a counter receptor for SN/Siglec1. During T cell activation CD43 is actively removed from the T cell antigen presenting cell contact site suggesting a negative regulatory role in adaptive immune response. Because it stains granulocytes and their precursors, it is also an effective marker for myeloid tumors
