The CD35 antigen is a transmembrane monomeric glycoprotein of 60-250kD. It is also known as complement receptor 1 (CR1) or C3b/C4b receptor as it binds the complement components C3b and C4b and thereby helps clear foreign particles. By facilitating C3b and C4b cleavage by factor I and accelerating the decay of the C3 and C5 convertases, CD35 limits complement activation and produces ligands for other complement receptors. CD35 antigen has been used in characterization of tumors of histiocytes and accessory dendritic cells by immunohistochemistry
