CD16 antigen is also known as Fc gamma receptor III and has a molecular weight of 50 to 70kD. It is a low affinity Fc receptor for complexed IgG-Fc gamma RIII, expressed on natural killer (NK) cells, granulocytes, activated macrophages and a subset of T cells expressing alpha-beta or gamma-delta T cell antigen receptors. The CD16 antigen exists both as a polypeptide-anchored form (FCgammaRIIIA or CD16A) on NK cells and monocytes/ macrophages and as a glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol (GPI)-anchored form (FcgammaRIIIB or CD16B) on neutrophils. Antibody-dependent cytotoxicity of NK cells is triggered by the engagement of CD16 with the Fc portion of IgG immunoglobulins bound to target cell-associated antigens. This antibody may be useful in the study of NK cell activity in autoimmune, neoplastic and infectious diseases
