Calretinin, also know as calbindin 2, is a vitamin D-dependent calcium binding protein that belongs to the calbindin family. It is mainly expressed central and peripheral nervous system and in many normal and pathological tissues. Calretinin can be found in different subsets of neurons and is considered as a valuable marker of neuronal subpopulations for anatomical and developmental studies. The absence of calretinin expression may serve as a diagnostic aid in identifying aganglionic segments in Hirschsprung?s Disease. It has been implicated as a calcium sensor, and regulator of apoptosis. Calretinin is approved as a highly sensitive and specific marker for mesothelial cells and one of the best positive makers for differentiating epithelial malignant mesotheliomas
