This antibody identifies Calretinin a protein of 31.5kDa. It is a intracellular calcium-binding protein of the troponin C superfamily characterized by a structural motif described as the EF-hand domain. It is abundantly expressed in central and peripheral neural tissues, particularly in the retina and in the neurons of the sensory pathways, and calretinin plays an important role in nerve cell survival during disturbances in calcium homeostasis. Calretinin is also expressed by both normal and neoplastic mesothelial cells, and it has been suggested as a useful marker for the identification of malignant mesotheliomas of the epithelial type and for the differentiation of these malignancies of lung adenocarcinoma
