The BRCA1 gene was mapped on chromosome 17q21, mutation in BRCA1 gene are highly predisposed to breast cancer. Specific BRCA1 gene mutations and differential expression have been noticed and characterized, including the founder mutation 185delAg in Askenazi Jewish families. The sequence of the BRCA1 protein is distinct from known families of proteins, except for a leucine zipper DNA binding motif. BRCA1 also acts as a tumor suppressor by mechanisms not yet understood.
